To extend the American bridgehead at Salerno, the Tabacchificio Fiocche, a large circular factory acting like a ready made fortress, had to be captured. It dominated and guarded the surrounding area. A fierce battle would ensue to control the complex, with the factory changing hands several times.
Here, GI's of 1/157th hold a shell damaged warehouse on the western edge of the large circular complex. Panzergrenadiers from I/Panzergrenadier-Regiment 79 of 16th Panzer-Division have re-captured the buildings on the eastern side of the factory, using automatic weapons to supress the defenders while they work their way through the complex, eventually forcing the hard pressed GI's to withdraw. Later the GI's would retake the factory and finally drive out the Panzergrenadiers.
