The Battle of Hastings. 14th October 1066

The battle that would irrevocably change the course of English history.
Having defeated a Viking army only days earlier at Stamford Bridge, Harold Godwinson, King of England, turned his army around and marched to the other end of the country to confront the invasion of Duke William of Normandy.
I was commissioned to paint this scene of the hard fought last stages of the battle, as in the fading Autumn evening light, Norman knights close on Harold and his bodyguard.
