'Quite a leader.' Major Digby Tatham-Warter. Arnhem, 19th September 1944

From a window in Brigade HQ, Maj. Freddie Gough was becoming disillusioned at their worsening predicament. That was until he peered out of the window. 'I looked and looked again,' Gough recalled. 'There, out on the street was Tatham-Warter, leading his men. He had found an old bowler hat someplace and he was walking along, twirling a battered old umbrella, looking for all the world like Charlie Chaplain. I roared with laughter and found John Frost. When I mentioned it to him, John just smiled and said, 'Oh yes, Digby's quite a leader.'
