Nelson's sailors clothing, 1793-1815

No uniform existed for ordinary sailors, but a captain expected his crew to look smart.
If anything resembled a uniform, it might consist of a short, usually blue jacket with a double row of buttons. Loose-fitting trousers that could be rolled up when working. Shoes would usually only be worn when going ashore or aloft. Hats were usually small and round brimmed, but when working on board would most likely be replaced with a head scarf.
