Cairn Hill, Manchuria. 30 August 1904. (Japanese view)

This painting is a Japanese view of the fight on the southern approaches to Cairn Hill during the Russo-Japanese War..

The three battalions of the 34th Infantry Regiment advance against a low, well-defended hill that sits less than 800m from the heart of the Russian positions behind, on Cairn Hill. The first two battalions advance in line next to each other with the third echeloned behind to the right.
Moving through tall fields of kaoliang is difficult but provides the soldiers with a degree of concealment. As the crops thin out, the Japanese emerge onto open ground, thick with barbed wire entanglements which slow their advance allowing the artillery, rifles, and Maxim machine guns of the Russians time to take a terrible toll. Despite terrible casualties the Japanese, encouraged by their officer, press forward using their rolled greatcoats to lay over the wire and pushing over the posts that support it.
