Hauptmann Wilhelm Steinmann of JG.4 was nicknamed ' Onkel Willi' (Uncle Willi) within his unit, because at 30 years of age he was so much older than the other pilots.
Steinmann was serving in Romania as punishment for shooting down the ace Hauptmann Erich Hohagen earlier in the year.
On the 1st August attack on the Romanian oilfields by the USAAF, he shot down a B-24D Liberator bomber south of Ploesti.
In this painting we see his subsequent attack, half an hour later on B-24D 'Satans Hell Cats' piloted by Capt. Rowland Houston. As Houston was leaving the target Steinmann managed to shoot down the already damaged bomber, but in the process his fighter was hit by machine gun fire from the top and rear turrets of the B-24D. He crashed near Brazi not far from the wreck of Capt. Houston's bomber.
