This painting is the view US view as the 84th Company of the 4th Marine Brigade are ambushed by German machine-guns in Belleau Wood.

The lead platoon of the 84th Company comes under fire as they cross open ground with the lush, untouched, green trees of Belleau wood atop the rising slope beyond. Subsequent reports stated that until the machine-guns opened fire, it had seemed like an exercise.
