US Combat Engineers, Salerno. Sept 9th, 1943

Under fire, troops of the 3rd Battalion, 531st Engineer Shore Regiment, move up the beach as part of the second wave of Operation Avalanche.
The soldiers on foot carry a variety of demolition and combat equipment. The figure on the left carries two sections of Bangalore torpedoes, ideal for breaking through barbed wire. The next figure carries a demolition charge bag and detcord spool. The foreground soldier carries an M1 Bazooka.
Beyond them a Caterpillar D-7 pulls a 40mm Bofors gun. At Salerno these versatile vehicles attracted heavy German fire with several vehicles disabled and drivers killed.
