Russian Machine guns. Nanshan Hill, 26th May 1904

Russian Maxim machine guns and infantry of the 5th East Siberian Rifle Regiment engage Japanese infantry from the 15th Infantry Regiment as they attack the Russian defenses.
The Japanese troops had never previously encountered barbed-wire obstacles and as their advance hesitated, Russian land mines, Maxim and rifle fire inflicted terrible losses.
The Japanese mounted further attacks but each was repulsed with the Japanese casualties amounting to 1359 soldiers, about 10% of the troops engaged.
It was only when the Russians flank was turned that the Siberian regiment was forced to withdraw.
