The 9th New York Infantry, also known as Hawkins' Zouaves, land in the first major amphibious landing of the Civil War. Disrupted by gale force winds and high surf, the landings to be abandoned leaving 323 troops stranded on the beach overnight in miserable conditions.
The commander of the Confederate defences at Forts Hatteras and Clark overestimated the strength of the Union force and surrendered the next day.
