Commanding the Second Division of sailors during the naval assault on Fort Fisher, Lieutenant Commander James Parker, Jr., led his men beyond the abatis at the foot of the defence works of the fort and through a gap in the damaged palisade.
As he climbed the steep slope of the Confederate earthworks, only about 60 men followed him, others seized with panic retreated on the run.
Under withering, heavy fire, parker ordered his men to shelter behind the palisade.
Under the cover of nightfall, Parker and the sailors who'd stood by him slipped back to their own lines carrying their wounded with them.
40 sailors, six Marines and eight sailors would receive the Medal of Honour for their brave conduct during the action.
