The drive to encircle Stalingrad. November 19-20, 1942

Operation Uranus, shattered two Romanian armies and encircled the 300,000 troops of Paulus' Sixth Army in Stalingrad.
Having broken through the defences of the Romanian Third Army, the 1st and 26th Tank and 8th Cavalry Corps of the 5th Tank Army began to dash south.
The relatively weak 48th Panzer Korps moved to block the Soviets. During the evening and night of November 19-20 the 1st Tank Corps engaged Kampfgruppe Oppeln from the understrength 22nd Panzer Division.
Shown in this painting a T-34/76 of 1st Tank Corps passes a knocked out PzKpfw III in what was a chaotic action near Peschanyl. The Germans managed to delay the Soviets who lost 50 of their 136 tanks but rest of the 5th Tank Army were able to pushed south.
On November 23, the Soviet armour linked up with the 4th Mechanized Corps, Paulus' army was trapped.
