With the creation of several new Panzer Brigades in the summer of 1944, The Germans launched a counter attack against the Third US Army in Lorraine.
Although equipped with the latest Panther tanks, the Panzer brigades performed badly, with poor organisation, inexperience and bad command decissions.
The 4th Armoured Division blunted the German attacks in a series of tank battles around the town of Arracourt, often fought in the gloom of very early morning fog.
The more experienced M4 tank crews of the US 4th Armoured Division would use the terrain to manouver against the vulnerable sides of the German tanks, often at close range.
