Spartan Warriors, c.346 BC

During the period of the Peloponnesian War there was a lightening of the Spartan warriors equipment. The cuirass and greaves were given up and the simpler pilos helmet was adopted.
The other warrior depicted is one of the perioikoi who increasingly filled out the ranks of the Lakedaimonian army. Shown here wearing the more protective and open 'Chalcidian' helmet, a lightweight fabric corslet and bronze greaves. As ever, his main protection is offered by the large hoplite shield, depicted here bearing the cockerel, a popular Spartan motif.
