The Spartan shield

The core of the hoplite shield was a hollow wooden bowl with a flat rim, constructed from several planks.
A thin layer of leather was glued to the interior face while the outside was faced with bronze which might be blank and polished, painted or embossed.
The inside of the shield had a central armband and cord hand grips. Anchor points appear to be for more cord to be threaded to assist carrying the shield.
