The fight for Djebel Semmama. February 19, 1943

This painting is a US view of the fight on the eastern side of the Kasserine Pass on the foothills of Djebel Semmama.

At 10.30hrs on a damp, overcast and windy morning, a battalion of soldiers from Panzergrenadier-Regiment Afrika launched their attack against the defensive positions of 1/26 Infantry.
The rough rocky ground prevented the digging of foxholes so the US infantry had to make the most of the cover offered by the rugged terrain. German artillery fire has pushed the members of the rifle squad onto a ridgeline overloking the Kasserine-Thala road that runs along the western slopes of Djebel Semmama.
A BAR gunner and the riflemen around him pour fire onto the advancing Germans below. One member of the squad lies dead on the slope while other wounder soldiers are placed in cover until they can be evacuated. The platoon leader and his staff sergeant are in a rushed discussion about the situation.
