Hungarian ambush at Golovanevsk. 6th August 1941

Ensign László Merész of the 1st Armoured Cavalry Battalion led a Hungarian reconnaissance patrol to locate the 4000 Soviet soldiers who had broken through the Axis lines headed towards the Hungarian 1st Cavalry Brigade.
At about 10.00am three Soviet cavalry squadrons bumped into the two Hungarian 39M Csaba armoured cars, with devastating results for the horsemen and their mounts.
In this painting we see the scene about an hour later, as a Soviet motor column is ambushed by the armoured cars, opening fire at close range and breaking cover.
As it approached the scene of the earlier cavalry ambush, the first Soviet truck was halted by direct hits, with following trucks running into it and blocking the road.
Two Companies of Soviet infantry in the woods to the south of the ambush advance urged forward by an NCO to take on the armoured cars.
The two Hungarian armoured cars halted the Soviet breakthrough, and at about midday were reinforced by another armoured car and a bicycle platoon .
